The Royal Sonesta New Orleans offers a prime location on Bourbon Street, placing guests in the heart of the French Quarter’s lively atmosphere. While praised for its staff, location, and some amenities, reviews highlight inconsistencies in room quality, service responsiveness, and parking availability, along with occasional noise issues.
Doorman staff is unbelievably friendly. Got to the hotel and the front desk told me my room was ready, but if I wanted to go into it two hours early it would cost me 50$. At this point I feel like they are really trying for every penny of my money. Quoted a room rate of 728$ for the weekend, the rate some how went up 200$? Plus the 300$ for incidentals. Which I still don’t have back. Room was clean, tv never worked properly, shower was a slow drip. Also something was wrong with the bartender at the Jazz club, he was probably the most impolite person I have seen in a minute. Went to the lower end seafood restaurant at the hotel for dinner mid at very best. Honestly the only thing that saved this place for me was the door person staff. They were completely accommodating and great.
Very nice appointments and location of you want to be in the middle of it all. Pool and courtyards allow you to escape the madness that is Bourbon St. Staff are excellent and there's actually daily room cleaning (that most hotels have abandon in some form or another). It's just the noise factor you'll have to deal with if you don't book the right room.
We reserved and paid for a room with a balcony facing Bourbon Street months before arriving. We were first checked into a room that had no balcony and was facing a brick wall. We went back to the front desk providing photo copies of our reservation information. We were informed that room was not available and ended up with a room that had a walkout shared patio facing the courtyard. Thinking we would get some type of discount or money back or credit at the end of our stay, we got an extra $85.00 charge for about 8 different destination fees instead.
We had a great overall stay at The Royal Sonesta. The location is unbeatable — right on Bourbon Street. Our balcony was the highlight of the trip. We loved listening to live jazz across the street throughout the evening. It truly felt like an authentic New Orleans experience. The room was spacious and comfortable. The coffee shop downstairs was convenient, and the jazz bar inside the hotel was excellent. Overall, the atmosphere of the property is lively and memorable. There were minor signs of wear in the room (one drawer was missing part of the bottom), but nothing major. The only negative experience occurred at checkout. We went to the front desk around 7:30 a.m. to request a late checkout and were told noon was approved (only and hour more which was more than fine) and that no further action was needed. However, around 11:01 a.m., a staff member dressed in all pink knocked on our door and instructed us to leave immediately. When we explained we had been granted a 12 p.m. checkout, she stated the information was incorrect and that we needed to vacate right away. There was no apology or acknowledgment of the miscommunication. A second staff member later contacted us and acknowledged there had been a mix-up. During that conversation, she referred to the earlier approval as “psychotic,” which was surprising to hear from hotel staff about an internal communication issue. While we understand Mardi Gras is an extremely busy time and events create pressure, the tone and internal lack of coordination felt unprofessional. As a U.S. veteran, I’ve stayed in many hotels and understand policies and event logistics. We were not upset about leaving — only about the way it was handled after being told otherwise. The rushed interaction and tone left us feeling uncomfortable at the end of what had otherwise been a wonderful stay. Overall, the location and balcony experience were exceptional. With better internal communication and more professional handling of guest interactions, this would easily be a five-star stay.
My wife and I stayed here this past weekend and had a great experience. The location can’t be beaten - directly on Bourbon. Surprisingly, we heard little to nothing of the outside noise while sleeping. The rooms are a little dated, but very clean and quite functional! The AC/Heater may be the most responsive HVAC we’ve ever encountered from any of our travels - worldwide. The real stars, however, were the staff! …a special shout-out to Malcolm who helped up with our bags with a smile and was available to help us with anything the entire weekend. Another shout-out goes to Caleb, who made getting transportation easy and painless. Both of these gentlemen went over and beyond to ensure that their guests received a premium experience. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Pet friendly and more than welcoming with our Great Dane. Caleb the doorman was always so welcoming every time we came and went. This Hotel is perfectly located for all things Bourbon Street. The rooms are spacious and clean. Valet available which was so convenient!
My husband and I got engaged at the Royal Sonesta many years ago, so this hotel has always been special to us. We decided to stay here again during our New Orleans visit for the Sugar Bowl. We had a horrendous experience. As we were driving into the French Quarter, we called the front desk to ask where to park. They told us to come to the Bienville entrance to park on site. A few minutes later, when we got to the entrance, the National Guard stopped us and told us that the parking garage was full and that NOPD had shut everything down. How can a hotel not have enough parking to accommodate the guests who have paid to stay there? We called the hotel again and were then told to park in one of two public parking garages that were several (six or more) blocks away from the hotel. We would have taken our older vehicle had we known we would have to park in a public facility. The traffic was crazy, so this added an additional hour to our total travel time. When we finally got to one of the garages, we were told it was a cash only facility at $50 per night. Thank God we had $50 cash, but we only had the cash to pay for one night. We never carry cash. The garage was almost full, and we had to circle every floor several times before we found a spot. Because of all of the people who double parked in the garage, we barely fit into the spot that we found. We had to haul ALL of our luggage several blocks to the hotel. If we had known that we would not be able to park at the hotel, we would have packed very differently. The following day, we had to find an ATM to retrieve more cash and walk all the way back to the garage to pay for another night of parking, which took away from time we had planned to spend with friends. We were only at the Royal Sonesta for two nights. If we had the option to stay at another hotel, we would have done so, but everything was booked because it was New Year’s Eve. Despite our complaints, the Royal Sonesta did very little to make things right. They gave us a restaurant credit that we didn’t use because we already had other dining plans. We had a terrible experience, and we can assure you that we will never stay at this hotel again. We advise all other travelers to avoid this hotel AT ALL COST.
This was our first time visiting New Orleans, and this hotel made the experience even better. The hotel itself was beautiful, and from the front desk to valet parking, everyone greeted us with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. The staff was extremely helpful with our baggage, and we loved spending time at the Jazz Bar. Dinner at Desire was also a great choice the workers were so fun and welcoming. We truly enjoyed our stay and would absolutely return!
We had a fantastic experience at Royal Sonesta New Orleans! The location is unbeatable — right on Bourbon Street with easy walkability to great restaurants, music, and historic sites, which made exploring the French Quarter super convenient. Our room was clean, comfortable, and beautifully decorated, and the staff was friendly and genuinely helpful throughout our stay. We loved relaxing by the pool and enjoyed the jazz and live music vibe that really captures the spirit of New Orleans. A few tips: if you prefer a quieter night’s sleep, request a room toward the interior courtyard rather than one right on Bourbon Street. Also, some onsite extras (like breakfast and valet) can add up, so plan accordingly. Overall, a memorable stay with Southern hospitality at its best — would definitely come back! ??????????
This hotel is very nice to stay in. The staff works hard. Kourtney, Derek, Sandra were awesome. Housekeeping delivered. There are convenient eateries and Robert and Chris at desire were great. I didn't see one staff member that was a problem but the internal functions of the hotel need to be severely altered to accommodate guests There are significant issues regarding convenience though. There's rarely a doorman and the double doors do not automatically open. This is a big hassle with luggage or equipment , countless wheelchairs and strollers entered all the while struggling at either hotel entry to open heavy doors ! The coupons issues for breakfast and drinks haven't many restrictions. I ordered my hotel on line and had no clue I was to be issued coupons. The other major issue was that you cannot get any room service here. I was tired and alone so I needed assistance without going downstairs Housekeeping was very slow to respond to requests. Many calls to the front desk to get items needed in the room. They must be very understaffed!!! Desire eatery does not have a phone that works. You physically have to walk in to order and pick up or dine in. NO ROOM SERVICE AT ALL AT THIS LUXURY PROPERTY and your room could be far from the actual restaurant like mine was I paid for a better quality suite. I will say that the windows were filthy. I know that it rains etc but these were like never cleaned! THEY CAN DO MUCH BETTER Photos depict amenities that they don't have. There is no in room dining here. The flavored water at entry of hotel was out most of the times I walked past it. There's no excuse for this. The photos are page 14 and 24 of the in room booklet called signature
