Guests praise the hotel's historic charm, Southern hospitality, and exceptional onsite dining at Bayou Bar and Jack Rose, with a location in the Garden District often described as the highlight. However, properties have declined, with recent reviews highlighting significant cleanliness issues, worn infrastructure and outdated facilities, and unprofessional front desk service that fails to match the historic ambiance.

4 star?! Nawwwwrrrr. Maybe 20 years ago.. the rooms are past their prime, dingy & dated. There was a pair of someone else’s underwear in my dresser lol. The elevators were broken every other day, felt normal. Sadly, the staff comes off as tired and over it. Highlight of the hotel is Bayou Bar & Jack Rose, hands down. We were unfortunately here during a city wide “boil water” notice so there was no safe tap water available. We were offered tiny bottles of water at the front desk. I was given unnecessary attitude on Tuesday am for asking for a few extra bottles. ( I asked for 5) NO RUNNING WATER and this girl gave me shade for asking for clean water to brush my teeth and wash my hands with? Wow. When we later checked out and needed to store our luggage for the afternoon, the same front desk girl (Tuesday am shift) let our luggage sit out to st least 5 min while she complained to another staffer. After a while we asked if she would be storing it away for us somewhere safe (full of professional camera gear) and she said “ya when I I’m done here” referring to her personal convo.

DO NOT STAY HERE. The customer service was horrible. The hotel somehow doubled my reservation and I was charged for two rooms. An email confirmation was never sent. There was no credit card charge either. Apart from “understanding my frustration” there was nothing helpful they could do and I had to eat the cost. That aside, the room is incredibly warm with a very outdated window A/C unit. Also, the room is very bright in the mornings with no blackout curtains. I hope you look elsewhere for your stay in New Orleans.

The Pontchartrain is a whole vibe. This place is New Orleans through and through, and an ideal home base for your next trip to the Big Easy. It’s rare to find a hotel that nails good food, great drinks, and genuinely excellent host of the city’s best jazz musicians all in one place, but The Pontchartrain delivers on all of it, plus a cozy, comfortable bed to come home to at night. The rooms and common spaces are eclectic, unique, and romantically true to the soul of New Orleans. One of the best parts of staying here is the location. Set in the Garden District, the hotel offers a quieter, more relaxed experience away from the chaos of the Quarter, while still being close enough to easily get to all the sights, music, food, and nightlife you’ll want to explore. It feels local, charming, and refreshingly calm after a day out in the city. Because this is a historic building, it comes with all the charm and character you’d expect, along with a few quirks. The hotel is older, like much of the city itself, so things like brief power flickers or lower water pressure in the shower can happen. If you’re someone who can roll with the flow, slow down, and appreciate a place for its history, personality, and lived-in beauty, this spot is truly special. If you need everything brand new and perfectly polished at all times, it may not be the right fit. Or better yet, YOU may not be the right fit for The Pontchatrain, ya dig? For travelers who love authenticity, music, atmosphere, and a sense of place, The Pontchartrain is an absolute gem. We will definitely be returning.

We just stayed for 3 nights. Positives - rooms are spacious, beds are comfortable, location is great, hotel food options are decent. Negatives - Rooms are in bad shape. Decor and finishings are dated and in poor repair. Not super clean.

We stayed at the Pontchartrain Jan 3-7, 2026. On the positive side, the Bayou Bar was really good and Jack and Rose restaurant for brunch was also quite good. The Cuban coffee at Silver Whistle became a nice morning ritual and the staff was very nice. On the not so positive side, they are very understaffed and it showed. It took a very long time to get into our room- an hour past check in. The room was run down and in real need of a renovation. There weren’t enough hangers, our friends ran out of TP, the rooms only got a quick ‘lick and a prayer’ type of cleaning - no restocking of supplies, like TP, coffee, clean cups, etc. Our room wasn’t cleaned typically until 5 or 6 PM. While I can recommend the restaurants, I can’t recommend staying at the hotel.

We had the most incredible stay at The Pontchartrain Hotel, where I spent the night before my wedding with my mom and sister, got ready with my bridesmaids, and then spent the night of our wedding with my husband. It could not have been more perfect. We stayed in the Melpomene Suite, which was absolutely beautiful — spacious, full of natural light, and with a stunning view of the city. The room was the ideal setting for getting ready and made the entire experience feel so special and memorable. From the comfort of the suite to the overall charm of the hotel, everything exceeded our expectations. We are so grateful to The Pontchartrain Hotel for being such an important part of our wedding memories and highly recommend it to anyone celebrating a special occasion in New Orleans.

Rooms are OK although a bit old. There's breaking on the wall. You cannot open windows so you can easily be allergic. It feels like it hasn't be upgraded in a while but it's OK. Service is not good. Reception is far from keen. (e.g: no idea if the gym is open on x day, won't look it up. Asked for water in the room, never got there. Called to enquire about NYE ticket - was told 5 different things by 5 different people. The different areas of the hotel don't communicate. Reception, Bayou, Hot Tin and Jack all have different level of information) Would not recommend. Location is OK - if you walk to the right side as you get out and explore the neighborhood there's a lot of cute houses - very nice for a stroll.

Staff has been rude. We asked for a microwave several times to reheat the food we brought over Thanksgiving, and we knew this was offered. The staff even said, every single time, that they would provide one. Ended up using a hair dryer to warm our dinner as even the kitchen staff wouldn't heat it up for us. What kind of 4 star hotel doesn't provide a way to eat your own food

The staff were courteous, and the location—right on St. Charles and steps from a streetcar stop—is excellent. Unfortunately, the hotel itself does not deliver a 4-star experience. I’m not sure it even rises to the level of a strong 3-star at this point; it feels noticeably worn and in need of meaningful refurbishment. Housekeeping did their best, but they’re fighting an uphill battle. The amount of dust and debris in the room—including a used tissue under one of our beds—suggests the property needs a true deep cleaning so the daily cleaning staff can keep up. Several operational issues also detracted from our stay. This was the first hotel where I could not receive a folio at checkout. We did leave one night early, but it was still unusual to have to wait a full day for the bill. Additionally, we were issued only a single physical key to the room, which made logistics difficult when our family needed to split up and felt risky if that one key were misplaced. Overall, the hotel has potential, but it is not currently delivering a premium, 4-star experience. Unfortunately, most of our conversations during the stay revolved around wishing we had booked the Ritz instead—perhaps not a perfect comparison (five-star vs. a claimed four-star), but the difference in quality was significant, while the difference in price was not.

The hotel itself and the staff were excellent. The rooftop bar has a nice view. The location itself isn't too bad but be careful if you like to wander around. To the southeast was very nice but a few blocks to the northwest gets sketchy. Street car stop is nearby.
